Honorary JASA member Adama Blagrove of the Montego Bay Autism Centre recognized April Autism Awareness month and organised a ballon release in Montego Bay to help with the spread of Autism Awareness in Jamaica.

Adama gives an account of the  activities that were carried out in Montego Bay….

The Montego Bay Autism Centre celebrated Autism Awareness Month by speaking at different churches about autism, and we also conducted a Balloon release on April 16th 2010 at the Dump-Up beach in Montego Bay. Most of the parents and students attended, and we had pastor Billy Mckillop pray for our children and parents.
We offer services to children from 2 1/2 to 6 yrs of age. Our program serves as an educational intervention for young children with autism, emphasizing individualized instruction based on on-going assessment, close collaboration with family, and the use of the child’s strengths and interest to further their development of both motivation skills on a wide range which includes:

  • “Learn how to learn” and build attention, organization and generalization and independence through the use of structured teaching
  • Functional expressive and receptive communications skills
  • Play, social interest, and skills
  • Developmentally appropriate and functional cognitive, motor, and self-care skills
  • Demonstration and training
